Synonyms and antonyms form the absolute backbone of 11+ verbal reasoning. Whether your child is sitting a GL Assessment, CEM, or a bespoke independent school paper, mastering word relationships is non-negotiable.

What do 11+ synonym and antonym questions look like?

In the 11+, vocabulary is rarely tested in isolation. Children will face a variety of question formats designed to trip them up if they only have a surface-level understanding of a word.

1. Matching Pairs
Children are given two lists of words and must find the two words that are most similar (synonyms) or most opposite (antonyms) in meaning.

2. Odd One Out
A list of four or five words is provided, and the child must identify the one word that does not share a similar meaning with the rest.

3. Words in Context
Children must select a synonym to replace a specific word within a sentence without changing the sentence's overall meaning. This requires understanding secondary definitions (e.g., knowing that "tender" can mean gentle, but also means to offer or present as payment).

Common 11+ Synonyms and Antonyms

The 11+ exams frequently rely on elevated, formal, or literary vocabulary. Here is a small sample of the tier of words children are expected to know:

How to practice effectively

Writing out lists of synonyms is tedious and rarely sticks in a child's long-term memory. The most effective way to build rapid recall for the 11+ is through active recall and spaced repetition.

By practising a few words every day and being tested on the same tricky words at strategic intervals, children naturally build the speed and confidence required to ace the verbal reasoning paper.
